Phillips’s passion for visual art started at an early age when he was fascinated by light and its complex attenuation with the family lighting design business. He was impacted by the diversity of styles of great photographers like Robert Doisenueax, Henri Cartier Bresson, Cheyco Leidmann, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Giorgio Nigirio, and Bruno Engler.

Phillips was born in Toronto, Canada, raised on the Scarborough Bluffs, schooled at RH King + renowned TV/Radio program @Stephen Leacock, lived in Banff/Whistler for 16 years, attended SAIT in Calgary for film and TV, and now resides in British Columbia. Kerry's personal photography journey began back in junior and then high school.
As a young boy, he became immersed in lighting, photography, darkroom printing, and film techniques; Phillips fell in love with the magic created and captured through the lens. Kerry was fascinated by the light, kinetics, and emotional connection that photography had with human response. Kerry developed an affinity for the diversity of styles by great photographers and became immersed in lighting, camera placement, photography, the darkroom, and advanced film techniques.
My fine art photography journey began with my first camera. A not-so-fine art Kodak Brownie given to him by a joint purchase from my parents and grandparents.(remember, back then,- photography was mostly for the affluent.) I discovered not only what is seen through the lens, -but also the poetry and allure of our natural world, years of intense dedication and practical photography consumed my attention. Nature and its seasons have been a major influencer on Kerry since his teens. The Environment Canada weather station training centre on the edge of Lake Ontario, down the street from his childhood home, helped feed his insatiable desire for nature, -much to the chagrin of his non-photographic friends, coworkers and family. Who I'm sure got exhausted with trying to keep up, then dawdle over the changing light. I'd like to thank everyone, who patiently tolerated and contributed to my passion.
Phillips's work explores emotion by connecting simple, natural subject matter to our human experience of impressionism, with the shot being “made in camera” with vintage lenses of many varieties. His favourites being 1950s/60s vintage Nikkor. Phillips’s technical expertise has evolved immensely throughout the years, working with award-winning film directors of photography in his lengthy film career, learning to combine time, movement, and composition at the right intuitive moment. Phillips's exploration is less about an actual place, and more about timeless, captivating visual poetry -‐ the viewer is drawn to deliberate, unstructured rhythm, glowing natural light, and obviously, -disdain for overuse of AI computer alteration. Technical mastery, with more loose and lyrical allure, allows us to experience the sublime photographic impressionism.
The lingering beauty of his disciplines consistently resonates a particular reverence, a relationship, and a compelling arrangement – throughout all his bodies of work. The sequence portfolio studies organized symmetry with a static narrative – our appreciation of man-made progress is given rhythmical ardour. Photographs are not as much about our relationship to time and space, as they are about ratios of time and movement. Phillips takes advantage of the coordinated humanity and nature to maintain vertical prescience with minimal tonal range on many of his specific galleries.
Nature
Meditative exploration into meaning that is entirely impassioned; Mother Nature is not just out there to be bracketed off, captured, and used up. There is an intuitive movement through time – fleeting and then stopped with the mindful intention that it is heightening the viewer’s connection to our environment with Phillip’s concerted effort - (situational observation). Love
Compositional elements sit in quiet equilibrium composed of textural layers of light, luminance, and consideration of the marine nuances. Phillips's works of life have an experience of purity and instinctive appreciation of power, humour, and transformation – To freeze a transitory moment of life, light, and energy that would never be captured the same again.
